Moissanite is not a diamond substitute pretending to be something else — it is its own stone, and it out-performs diamond on two measurable properties. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more light, and its dispersion is more than double, which produces the flashes of colour people call fire. Side by side with a lab diamond, a moissanite is the livelier stone.

What it gives up is hardness. Moissanite sits at 9.25 on the Mohs scale against diamond's 10. That is still harder than sapphire and entirely suitable for daily wear, but it means a moissanite will show fine surface marks a little sooner over decades. Worth knowing rather than worrying about.

The reason most people choose it is arithmetic. A 2ct moissanite costs a fraction of a 2ct lab diamond of the same colour and clarity, which is why it is the stone we recommend to anyone who wants maximum presence on the hand for a fixed budget.
