A cathedral setting takes its name from the arches of a cathedral ceiling: the shoulders of the band sweep upward to meet the centre stone rather than meeting it flat. Those arches carry the stone higher and give the ring a sense of lift you can see from the side.

Beyond the look, the arches do real work. They add metal where a ring takes the most stress, so a cathedral setting is structurally one of the more durable ways to hold a large centre stone. That makes it a sensible choice for a 2ct centre or above, or for anyone who wears their ring every day without taking it off.
