It is a quieter, more architectural kind of sparkle, and it either suits you immediately or it does not.

The trade-off is honesty. A step cut hides nothing. Inclusions and colour that would disappear inside a round brilliant are visible through an emerald cut's open table, so this is the one shape where we would tell you not to economise on clarity. With lab grown diamonds that matters less than it used to, because higher clarity grades cost a fraction of what they once did.
