A princess cut is square with sharp, uncut corners and a brilliant facet pattern underneath. It gives you more of the rough crystal than almost any other shape, which is why a princess has historically cost less per carat than a round of equivalent quality — you are simply paying for less waste.

The sharp corners are its one real weakness. They are the thinnest points on the stone and the most likely to chip if the ring is knocked, so we set every princess with protective V-prongs at the corners rather than standard claws. It is a small detail that materially changes how long the ring survives daily wear.
